Communions, Confirmations, Christenings - these types of events can be tricky to dress for

Not quite as formal as a wedding, but more dressed up than a usual Sunday lunch or family gathering.

When I work with clients to give them styling options for occasions, we always talk through the type of event and what I call the ‘tone’ of the event in figuring out what the outfit should be.

I ask them questions like:

  • Where is it being held?

  • Will it be at home, or will they go to a restaurant?

  • Who will be there?

  • Is it more of a relaxed, casual event at home; or more of a formal event with extended family for example?

There are plenty of options to think outside the dress box this year with lots of brightly coloured suiting, with trousers to suit every shape & preference, from cigarette to flare leg to wide leg.

However, a go to for many women is a dress - and there are plenty of options at this time of the year as we embark on a new season and see an influx of dresses into our stores.

Here are some options from River Island currently available online. Choose from florals, neutrals, bright colors or darker florals which are a more wearable way of doing florals for some people.

All of these dresses would be simple to style: just add a pair of court shoes or heeled sandals, and some jewellery (a necklace or earrings depending on the neckline of the dress) and you're done.

In terms of outerwear,  you could pair them with a blazer (watch your proportions) or a smart trench, dress or duster coat.
